On 1 June, in the conference hall of VSU, Dmitry Endovitsky, Rector of the university, met with students of the Faculty of Computer Sciences, two-time second-place winners of the International Sports Programming Festival “Peace Code”. The head of the university noted the outstanding achievements of young experts who honourably represented the region at the large-scale professional competition.
At the competition held in Grozny from 24 to 28 May, a team of students from the Faculty of Computer Sciences took second places in two disciplines: algorithmic and product programming. A group of three students participated in the first competition: Nikita Berezhnov, Maksim Novotochinov, and Yulia Shishko. Among the winners, along with the VSU team, were representatives of major metropolitan universities: Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, MISIS, St. Petersburg State University, and Saint Petersburg State Electrotechnical University. In the second discipline, Aleksandr Antonov and Nikita Morozov joined the team. In product programming, the students of the Faculty of Computer Sciences were behind the competitors from the Chechen Republic.
The personal meeting with the rector of VSU was attended by all participants of the festival from the Faculty of Computer Sciences. They told the head of the university about the workflow of the past competitions and presented their ideas about the specialised competitions. Dmitry Endovitsky thanked Dmitry Solomatin, a senior lecturer, leading specialist at Informsvyaz, who coached the team, and Alexander Krylovetsky, Dean of the Faculty of Computer Sciences, for training gifted specialists. He noted the great importance of the well-built system of education at the faculty, which provides students with the basis for their victories.
“You show absolutely amazing results! Once again you contribute to the promotion of the university brand with your successes. It is great that of all competitive programming student teams of the region it was you who represented the Voronezh Region at the international festival. You are strong, you had good chances to win, and you did not let us down,” said Dmitry Endovitsky.
The prize-winners noted the well-coordinated teamwork, which helped them to complete the tasks properly and get a high score. According to the students of the Faculty of Computer Sciences, they were agitated by the scale of the competition and the complexity of the tasks, but they managed to overcome it.
“We were developing an application that could be immediately available for production. We felt a certain responsibility and excitement, because we wanted to show ourselves and prove that we were no worse than the metropolitan universities. Today, the most talented students want to go to Moscow and Saint Petersburg. For me, it was a matter of principle to show that Voronezh has a decent level of education and excellent training of students at specialised universities,” said Yulia Shishko.
The rector of VSU reminded that the university’s partners have great demand for the development of software and algorithms that would help optimise the work process of banks and large state companies. Students can apply their skills and earn money even while studying.
“Proper preparation is essential for our victories, not only for competitions, but also academic training. At the Faculty of Computer Science, there are relevant courses, there is teamwork,” emphasised the students’ coach Dmitry Solomatin.
“Our faculty raises many decent specialists. There are many of them, and all of them represent the “golden pool” of the Faculty of Computer Science,” said Alexander Krylovetsky.
