In the new version of the Interfax ranking, Voronezh State University took 44th place in the general ranking (previously it was 49–50th) and improved its performance in the educational activities, taking the 13th place instead of 24–25th last year. The research activities of the university took 44–45th place (as compared to last year’s 85–87th) while the level of socialisation took 58–59th place (as compared to the previous result, 71st place).

The National Ranking of Universities has been prepared by the Interfax Group since 2010. The purpose of the ranking is to develop mechanisms and procedures for an independent evaluation system of Russian universities and their educational programmes, to increase the competitiveness of the Russian education system, scientific research, and technological entrepreneurship, and to develop federal and regional universities.

368 Russian universities were evaluated as part of the research for the ranking. The ranking included all leading universities of Russia: 28 national research universities, 10 federal universities, 32 flagship universities, and 98 universities participating in the Priority 2030 programme. Also, 7 non-state universities were assessed.

The assessment was conducted based on data processing from questionnaires submitted by universities, public data posted by educational institutions on their websites, public data from information resources of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation, as well as data from information and analytical systems.

The activities of universities were evaluated according to six parameters: education, research, social environment, collaboration, innovation and entrepreneurship, and brand. All parametric and total assessments are presented as a dimensionless 1000-point scale, and universities are ranked according to their points in descending order. The total ranking is the sum of six parameters.

“The results of the annual study of the activities of Russian universities confirm their stable and systematic development against the background of serious transformations and necessary changes. Modern universities are looking for new ways to preserve their competitiveness and keep the communication channels between the academic community, public, and business. An independent examination of the most important functional areas of universities’ operations also allows us discovering opportunities and growth points that will help them strengthen their positions in the education market and become more popular among prospective students, industrial partners, and employers,” said Alexei Gorshkov, First Deputy General Manager of the Interfax agency.
