Professor Sergey Kurgalin, Head of the Department of Digital Technologies of VSU, and Alexander Romanov, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Digital Technologies and a leading engineer of the VSU’s Supercomputer Centre, took part in the 10th anniversary International Conference “Distributed Computing and Grid Technologies in Science and Education” (GRID’2023), which was held on 3–7 July 2023 at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR), Dubna. VSU employees presented a report “High-performance computing on math coprocessors and graphical processing units using Python”. The report demonstrated methods of high-performance computing based on math coprocessors and graphical processing units. It also showed that in many cases using Python algorithmic language for such computing makes creating, debugging, and testing program code much more convenient. These methods were tested on a high-performance computing cluster of the VSU’s Supercomputing Centre.

The themes of the GRID’2023 conference corresponds to the most relevant areas of modern information technology: distributed, high-performance and cloud computing, supercomputers, quantum informatics and quantum computing, machine learning and artificial intelligence, big data analytics and platforms, neural networks and intelligent control systems, etc. The programme of the conference included a round table discussion ‘RDIG-M – Russian Distributed Infrastructure for Large-Scale Scientific Projects in Russia”. The Laboratory of Information Technologies of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research, the organiser of the conference, has one of the most powerful supercomputers in Russia. Some of the reports at the conference were dedicated to its application.

The conference was attended by 275 scientists from 17 countries and 41 Russian universities and research centres. The participants gave 30 reports during plenary meetings and 135 reports during panel meetings. Presentations were made by Grigory Trubnikov, Director of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research, Full Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Vladimir Voevodin, Director of the Research and Computing Centre of Moscow State University, Associate Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Professor Vladimir Korenkov, Head Researcher at the Laboratory of Information Technologies of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research, Vasily Velikhov, Deputy Director for Information Technologies and Systems of the National Research Centre “Kurchatov Institute”, and other leading experts in various fields of information technologies.

A number of events were dedicated to the anniversary of the conference: it has been the 10th conferences in a row which have been held at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research since 2004. It appeared to be the largest in terms of the number of participants and reports. Professor Sergey Kurgalin took part in the conference and gave a presentation at the very first GRID’2004 conference when it was just the beginning of the development of high-performance computing technologies in Russia. The report was devoted to the VSU’s supercomputer, which was installed in 2002 and was then the 26th among all supercomputers in Russia and the CIS countries.

The next, 11th GRID’2025, conference will be held at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in July 2025.
