Third year students from the Faculty of Physics (specialisation “Nuclear Physics and Nuclear Technologies”) completed their internships at the Novovoronezh branch of Rosatom Technical Academy. During the month of internship they learned about the main equipment of the nuclear power plant. They were told about the thermal-hydraulic processes taking place in nuclear devices, safety, and control of the operation of nuclear reactors. Besides learning the theory, the students also got to complete some practical tasks. The training was performed using full-scale and analytical simulation units analogous to the modern units of the Novovoronezh nuclear power plant.
“Everything I saw at Rosatom Technical Academy was fascinating. For example, the size of the simulation units and the number of transmitted signals. Only now am I starting to understand how a nuclear power plant works. I’m glad I had my internship here. It would be great to get a job at the plant. I think it’s interesting”, said one of the students Nikita Gorbunov.
“We saw the classes for the prospective employees of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant (Bangladesh). I am a physics students, but I’m also learning English. I liked to watch the work of the interpreters at the plant. I think I myself could do it”, said Anastasia Schepkina.
“It’s a pleasure to work with people who are eager to learn. We are trying to show students what studying at the academy is like and show them our equipment”, said Evgeny Sharshov, an instructor at the plant.
“During internships, students see everything they’ve been studying in real life. When they see the scale of the power units, they often realise that these units are in fact not like they used to imagine them. This gives students a better understanding of their future profession”, said Alexander Zykov, the chief expert at the plant.
As a result of the one-month internship, students made their own presentations. During the last class, they could try out the role of instructor.
“In 2023–2024 our second year master’s degree students (specialisation “Nuclear Physics and Nuclear Technologies”) will complete several courses at the Novovoronezh branch of Rosatom Technical Academy, including “Operation of Nuclear Power Plants” and “Safety and control in nuclear reactor physics”. Both master’s and bachelor’s degree students will complete their internships at the plant. Thus, specialist’s degree students studying on the programme “Nuclear Power Stations: Design, Operation, and Engineering” will have their internships at Rosatom Technical Academy next summer. They will be trained by teachers from the Fundamental Department of Nuclear Power Plants with Pressurized Water Power Reactors. These courses are of a very high quality. Our students acquire new knowledge and skills required for safe operation of nuclear power plants. I am sure, more and more of our students are going to complete internships at Rosatom Technical Academy. Next year, for instance, it is going to be 50 students”, said Larisa Titova, Head of the Department of Nuclear Physics at VSU.
