Between 27 June and 19 July, first year students from the Faculty of History completed their internships together with representatives of GK Chernozemye. They practised excavation and restoration methods and learned to draw topographic maps and use levelling units. The internship also included lectures by graduates and PhD students, which made it more interesting and educational. All this helped the students to feel like they were true archaeologists.

There were no excavations this year, but the students still had field practice where they learned to draw topographic maps of the region and cemeteries, learned to use levelling units and theodolites, to set excavation tents, and dig test pits.

“It was a very interesting and educational expedition. I liked working together with my group mates, setting up the camp, and sitting by the fire till dawn. The weather was a bit of a problem, since we had to work both when it was extremely hot and unbearably cold. Another problem was that we didn’t have an archaeological excavation permit, so we couldn’t dig anything. But on the whole it was good. I’m glad I got a chance to be a true archaeologist”, said a first year student Andrey Barbashin.

“There were also lectures. Graduates and PhD student from the faculty talked about the conservation and restoration of archaeological findings, commercial archaeology, and their own studies”, said Alexander Golyshkin, a PhD student from the Department of Archaeology and Ancient History and a researcher at GK Chernozemye.

The internship was supervised by Alexander Medvedev, Head of the Department of Archaeology and Ancient History, Associate Professor Irina Zinkovskaya, and lecturer Anton Yablokov.
