Between 10 and 13 September, the 8th Eastern Economic Forum was held at Far Eastern Federal University. Daniil Sopin, a student from the Faculty of Geology, took part in the forum as a member of the youth media centre at the Ministry of Education and Science. Daniil told us about his work during the forum and his trip to Vladivostok.

“The job of our media centre was to cover the main events of the forum and arrange the informational support of all the events organised by the Ministry of Education and Science. Our team consisted of 15 people from all over the country. We spent the four days of the forum running around the campus and collecting exclusive materials. I took over 20 thousand steps every day. The day I was collecting material for an exhibition “Streets of the Far East” I took 30 thousand steps.”

The main event of the forum was the meeting with Olga Petrova, Deputy Minister of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation, and presentations about student mass media, attended by Stepan Kalmykov, Vice-President of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

“Every day I spent 12–14 hours at the venue, so by the night I was exhausted and my only wish was to get to bed as soon as possible. However, we had plans to walk around Vladivostok, so we had to cut down on sleeping. The locals told us that the city was to become the second Saint Petersburg, so it was designed in the same way. The main difference between Vladivostok and Saint Petersburg, however, is the landscape: in Vladivostok you are always going up or down. I was also surprised that the locals love the sea. When you come to sea resorts in the south of the country, you learn that local people don’t bother about the sea. They might not even go for a swim for several years. For Vladivostok it’s different. The locals adore the Sea of Japan, and you always feel their love for it when they talk about it. It seems that the sea is a kind of a power place for these people.

For me the participation in the Eastern Economic Forum was a unique opportunity because of the varied programme, the number of outstanding people I met, and the distance from Voronezh. This is something I will remember my whole life! And I’d like to say thank you to VSU and the dean of the Faculty of Geology Viktor Nenakhov for this opportunity.
