From 1 to 3 October, the All-Russian Competitive Programming Contest among student teams “Cup of the Future” was held in Nizhny Novgorod. Nizhny Novgorod was chosen as the venue for the competition following a meeting between Mikhail Mishustin, Prime Minister of the Russian Federation, promoters of the competitions, and the leaders of the Competitive Programming Federation at the conference “Digital Industry of Industrial Russia”.
In addition to Nizhny Novgorod students, the organisers invited participants who had won prizes in Russian and international competitions during the year. Among them was a team from the Faculty of Computer Sciences of VSU consisting of Nikita Berezhnov, Maksim Novotochinov, and Yulia Shishko.
Over 4 hours the participants of the competition made software to solve 12 algorithmic problems proposed by the organisers. The competition was quite dramatic for the VSU team. They had an unsuccessful start, as a result of which by the end of the first hour of the competition the team was at the very bottom of the ranking table. However, the participants managed to pull themselves together and bridge a big gap. As they solved many tasks, they were among the top three winners, and got the well-deserved bronze medals. Moreover, our team managed to solve the 11th task, which determined the final result, in the last minutes of the allotted time.
The second place and silver medals went to the team of the National University of Science and Technology (MISiS), whose participants also coped with 11 problems, but in less time. The team from Saratov State University won the competition, they solved all the proposed tasks.
These medals are the fourth award of the team of the Faculty of Computer Sciences at national and international competitions organised by the Federation of Competitive Programming of Russia.
