On October 17, in the hall of the first floor of the main building of VSU, students were presented with a photo exhibition of the Bank of Russia “Peter’s Creation”. The exhibition was held with the support of the Museum and Exhibition Centre of VSU.
The photo panel presents enlarged images of commemorative coins made of precious metals associated with the achievements of the era of Peter the Great. The founding of new cities, the creation of a regular army and navy, monetary reform and the creation of a secular education system, these and many other significant events are captured in the works of medal-winning artists.
An expert from the Voronezh branch of the Bank of Russia, Alina Parshina, spoke at the opening of the exhibition:
“There is no other person in our country to whose legacy so many commemorative coins would be dedicated as to Peter I. At the exhibition you can learn more about these coins and admire the work of medal artists.
For more than 30 years, the country's main bank has issued more than fifty commemorative coins associated with Peter I. For example, one of the photo panels shows an image of a coin that was especially significant for Voronezh residents. This is a 1000 roubles gold coin dedicated to the ship “Goto Predestination”. 500 copies of this coin were minted in the “History of the Russian Navy” series in 2010.
The history of the creation of the Russian navy is connected with “Goto Predestination” (“God’s Predestination”). It is believed that the design of the ship was brought from England and finalised by Peter I. This was the first battleship created by Russian craftsmen. The St. Andrew's flag was raised on its mast immediately after the Tsar established it as the official flag of the Russian navy. The image of the sail boat on the coin is inspired by one of engravings of Adrian Schonebeck.
“Voronezh is the cradle of the Russian fleet. This title we owe to Peter the Great. He is an iconic personality for our city. Thanks to him, people learned about Voronezh, not only in Russia, but also abroad,” said Alina Parshina.
The coins depicted in the exhibition are of great value among collectors.
