For the second year, at the site of the Novovoronezh branch of the Technical Academy, the training of master’s degree students started in in October. Cooperation between Voronezh State University, which is part of the Consortium of flagship universities of Rosatom, and the academy continues to develop.

17 second-year master's degree students in Nuclear Physics and Technology of VSU began studying special subjects: “Operational safety and control of nuclear power plants”; “Radiation protection of nuclear facilities”; “Nuclear Power Plant Machinery and Equipment”; "Safety and control in nuclear reactor physics".

The training at the enterprise will last until December. The number of hours in some disciplines has been increased. The experience of last year showed that this is necessary. Students will have additional time to master the material. Training is necessarily practice-oriented. In addition to lectures, there are practical exercises with watching educational films and getting acquainted with a full-scale simulator. As the director's advisor, Alexander Ivanchenko, emphasised at the meeting with students, master’s degree student have at their disposal the most modern educational materials and the invaluable experience of engineers who willingly share the secrets of their profession.

“All the students came to the Novovoronezh branch of the Technical Academy with great motivation. It’s nice to see that they are well-mannered and organised,” said Olga Ivanova, who is responsible for organising the training.

After each special course, master’s degree student will take tests. With mutual interest in the learning process, both on the part of the academy's engineers and on the part of the students, the results will not be long in coming. However, these are short-term tasks. The main thing is that in the future, today's students plan to work in the Electric Power Division or within Rosatom.

“The university provided us with a good theoretical basis. People leave the physics department with a high level of education thanks to the teachers. At the academy there is practice. Your engineers have extensive experience working at nuclear power plants and know the operating features. An excursion to a full-scale simulator provides an opportunity to see the processes occurring at the block control panels of the innovative 6 and 7 power units of the Novovoronezh station. Where else we will get such an opportunity? I’m already working at Novovoronezhatomenergoremont and in the future I would like to stay at one of the enterprises within Rosatom,” said student Yana Muravleva.

The course in nuclear physics is also being mastered by master’s degree student Perez Moreno Anthony Carlos. Two years ago, Anthony Carlos came from Bolivia to Voronezh, took a Russian language course and began studying at the Faculty of Physics at Voronezh State University. The ambitious plans of young Bolivian’s include postgraduate studies in Moscow at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research. This student clearly understands that the direction he has chosen has a future. There are no nuclear power plants in Bolivia, but thanks to Rosatom, nuclear medicine is developing and a centre for nuclear research and technology (CNRT) is being built.

“This academic year, two bachelor’s graduate qualification works and two master’s graduate qualification works will be carried out under the scientific supervision of Alexander Ivanchenko, associate professor of the Fundamental Department, Ph.D. in technical sciences, adviser to the Novovoronezh branch of the Rosatom Technical Academy, and head of the department of artificial intelligence, robotics, and digital services in education, Alexey Kalmykov. Cooperation between VSU and the Novovoronezh branch of the academy is expanding. In the same year, in addition to the practical training of third-year bachelor’s degree students of the programme “Nuclear Physics and Technology”, there will be a summer internship for second-year students of the programme “Nuclear Power Plants: Design, Operation, and Engineering”. During this practice, students will gain first knowledge about their future profession,” said the head of the department, Larisa Titova.

In addition, a textbook “Introduction to Nuclear Energy” is being prepared for publication, the authors of which are the head of the Fundamental Department of “NPP with PWR reactor” Alexander Ivanchenko, the head of the sector of the Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research Yuri Penionzhkevich and Associate Professor of the Department of Nuclear Physics of VSU Viktor Vakhtel. The textbook will be used in universities for 3rd and 4th year students of the physics department, and, according to experts, it will also be useful for first-year master’s degree students.
