On October 16–20, the VII Congress of the Parasitological Society took place in Petrozavodsk at the Karelian Scientific Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences, in which Irina Budaeva, associate professor of the Department of Zoology and Parasitology at the Faculty of Biomedical Sciences of VSU, took part. Also, about 120 parasitological specialists working in scientific institutes and universities in our country and neighbouring countries participated in the conference.

As part of the section “Biological foundations of medical and veterinary parasitology: ectoparasites and vectors,” Irina Budaeva presented a report on the fauna, ecology and epidemiological significance of blood-sucking insects in our region. The co-authors of the study were students of the Department of Zoology and Parasitology Anastasia Elizarova and Ella Ghazaryan.

“The work of the scientific forum was very fruitful. Several plenary sessions and numerous sections became a platform for discussing a number of topical problems that modern biology and medicine deal with: the parasitic aspects of global climate change, the introduction of new host species and parasites, the expansion of the nosoareas of viral and bacterial infections transmitted by insects and ticks. The studies of young scientists actively using molecular genetic, immunological, and biochemical methods for studying parasitic diseases were of particular interest to the participants of the congress. The results of the joint discussion and exchange of knowledge will undoubtedly be useful for further scientific work and solving applied problems,” said Irina Budaeva.
