On 6 December, a lecture by Alexander Sergeev, head researcher at the National Centre for Physics and Mathematics and a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, was held at the Assembly Hall of the VSU Main Building. The lecture was titled “In search for eternal energy: why do we need ultra-intense lasers and what are researchers from the National Centre for Physics and Mathematics working on?”.

The lecture was a part of a tour of Russian cities supported by Rosatom State Corporation. During the tour leading researchers presented their projects implemented jointly with young scientists and aimed at the development of the nuclear industry, as well as basic and applied science in Russia. Researchers from the National Centre for Physics and Mathematics talked about the development of artificial intelligence technologies and designing mathematical models of complex technical and natural systems.

“Voronezh State University plays an important role in the development of Russian science and technology. When we think about the future of our country, we realise that technological independence is a must. Without it we can’t compete for global leadership. The nuclear industry is the main scientific achievement of our country. It demonstrated how theoretical knowledge can be quickly transformed into new technologies used in the defence and energy industries. All this was possible thanks to new ideas developed by physicists in the middle of the previous century. Today, it is important to create a system, where new ideas can be of immediate use to the country. Rosatom is an example of such a system”, said Alexander Sergeev.

He also pointed out that today the nuclear industry offers new technological solutions. Since power supply determines the development of all spheres of society, physicists continue their quest for new energy sources. It is of a special importance right now, when researchers make new discoveries about the mysteries of nature and the nature of matter.
