On 19 January, a cooperation agreement between the university and the Federation of Computer Sports was concluded in the White Hall of the main building of VSU. Among the speakers at the meeting were Dmitry Endovitsky, VSU Rector, Dmitry Zhukalin, Head of the Department of Innovations, and Konstantin Rudov, Chairman of the Voronezh regional branch of the Federation of Computer Sports.
“In the past few years, esports have been developing in our country much faster than it used to. New sports have emerged, for example, figital sports (functional-digital sports). Today, it is important to start our cooperation by signing an agreement and to start organising new sports events. In the nearest future, the regional stage of the All-Russian Student Esports League will be held, in which VSU e-sports athletes will take part,” said Konstantin Rudov.
In 2019, the VSU Esports student club was founded at VSU which has been representing the university at competitions at both the regional and federal levels. At the moment, the club consists of more than 50 members from almost all university faculties, who not only take an active part in the competitions, but also organise them and provide their press coverage.
“Russia was the first country to recognise esports as an official sport in 2001, but in 2006 the sport was removed from the register. On 7 June 2016, the order of the Ministry of Sports was published, according to which computer sports were included in the register of official sports of the Russian Federation again. And the next year, the Federation of Computer Sports of Russia became the accredited sports federation for “computer sports”. The Federation of Computer Sports of Russia annually holds the Championship of Russia, the Cup of Russia, and other competitions of the national level in esports. It also pays special attention to the development of student esports,” said Dmitry Zhukalin.
“I am very glad that our university is actively developing esports. Voronezh is the mathematical centre of Russia, because it is impossible to do esports without fundamental knowledge in the field of mathematics. Without a doubt, we will provide all the necessary support to VSU esports players,” said Dmitry Endovitsky.
