On 2 February, the Department of English Language for Sciences Faculties together with the VSU I.A. Sternin Communication Studies Centre and the Department of General Linguistics and Stylistics held the tenth anniversary national scientific conference with international participation “Comparative methods in linguistic research. Interlingual and intralingual comparison” as part of the VSU scientific school in the field of general and Russian linguistics.
For the second year now, this conference is called “Sternin Readings,” and the plenary meeting started a minute of silence in tribute to the memory of Joseph Sternin and Professor Yuri Koprov, a many-time participant of these conferences.
The conference gathered representatives of universities from Voronezh, Moscow, Saratov, Krasnodar, Novosibirsk, Kazan, Volgograd, Bishkek (Kyrgyzstan), Minsk (Republic of Belarus), and Almaty (Republic of Kazakhstan).
Scientists from Voronezh State University, Minsk State Linguistic University (Republic of Belarus) and the American University of Central Asia (Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan) presented their reports at the plenary meeting.
In total, 35 presentations were given during the four sections of the conference. They were dedicated to comparative semantic studies, comparative studies in psycholinguistics, comparative studies of national conceptual frameworks and communicative behaviour, comparative studies in grammar and text, and comparative studies and translation problems.
Besides well-known scholars, the conference has always been attended by young researchers who are taking their first steps in science. This year has been no exception: bachelor’s and master’s degree students from Voronezh, Moscow, and Saratov presented the results of their research. Their works were highly praised by the participants of the conference.
The final meeting was dedicated to summing up the results of the sections as well as the results of ten years of conferences, and the participants who spoke at all 10 conferences were distinguished. A poetic chronicle of the conferences was presented by their constant participant, Professor Anatoly Babushkin.
The conference materials were published in the 21st issue of the scientific journal “Comparative research 2024”, dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the VSU Scientific School in the field of general and Russian linguistics.
