A second year master’s student from the Faculty of Computer Sciences, Svetlana Maslennikova, became the winner of the “Gagarin.Hackathon” which was held online between 12 and 14 April and attracted participants from all over Russia. This major online marathon was organised by the Opportunity Accelerator.

Svetlana won the fourth case: Sentiment of Telegram channels on the stock market. Maslennikova had to solve the issue of text processing in two stages: recognition of named entities and analysis of the text sentiment related to each entity. Among the conditions were time limit for working on the solution and no use of the GPU (graphics processing unit). In total, hackathon participants were given five tasks from partner companies: BIP.RU, Kod Pamyati, IT HUB, Euler Analytical Technologies, and Elvis-NeoTech. The expert jury of the hackathon consisted of representatives of partner companies.

“The case was related to the analysis of the sentiment of messages in Telegram channels. I decided to take part because the task seemed interesting. While I was looking for a solution, it turned out that there were two subtasks: to find a mention of the organisation in the text and then to analyse its sentiment using a five-point scale. In addition, there were speed and performance limitations: we were not allowed to use graphical processing units, and the operating time had to be no more than 10 seconds. For me, speed and performance limits were a real challenge that I focused on in my solution. When the winners were announced, it was great and unexpected that my solution was so highly appreciated. This is the first big victory in such competitions for me,” said Svetlana.

At the start, there were 208 teams who began working on the solution. Based on the results of the pitch session, the winners were selected who shared the competition prize fund of 1,250,000 roubles. “Gagarin.Hackathon” was presented by talented IT specialists who demonstrated a high level of skills and knowledge in a short time, presenting their unique products to experts for each of the cases.
